The Marriott Durham is a traditional stone property, the oldest parts of which date back to the 18th century, situated in on the banks of the River Wear, 350 metres from the Castle and Cathedral. This three-floor hotel features 150 guestrooms, many with views either of the Castle and Cathedral or of the river, and include cable television, direct-dial phones with voicemail, tea/coffee-makers and minibars. Bathrooms include tubs, showers and complimentary toiletries. Health-conscious guests can head to the indoor pool, which is flanked by Grecian-style pillars and a terrace area complete with loungers and towels. Those feeling more energetic can tone up in the gym, which offers a range of cardiovascular equipment, including treadmills, cross trainers, steppers, rowers and bikes, as well as a free-weights area. After a workout, guests can relax with a dip in the spa tub or head for the sauna and steam room. Diners have the choice of two restaurants: a continental á la carte restaurant and an informal carvery-style eatery which offers a buffet lunch. Snacks and drinks are available throughout the day in the lounge bar. Business guests can enjoy access to seven meeting rooms, the largest of which can accommodate up to 120 people. Practical amenities include dry-cleaning services, a cash point, around-the-clock room service and a concierge on hand to offer advice on local sights and attractions. Those arriving by car will find complimentary parking facilities on site. The attractions of Durham are a short stroll from the hotel, with the city's famous Cathedral, the town centre's shops and restaurants and the Castle all within 350 metres. The Beamish open-air museum is eight miles away, and the towns of Sunderland, Hartlepool and Newcastle are all within 16 miles. Newcastle Airport is 20 miles away, with an approximate driving time of 30 minutes.
